Accomplishments

Accomplishments

WMTA has provided leadership on a variety of improvements and initiatives designed to alleviate high taxes, improve the viability and safety of the infrastructure, and beautify the community. Our successes include: 

    • 2012 - Obtained a $500,000 Grant for developing the West Maui  Skate Park officially opens - thanks to matching funds from County of Maui, WMTA  board member Pam English was the Grant Writer who had the full support of the WMTA and WMIF in this process including lobbying and letters of support and additional fundraising, "Donovan McNab of Lahaina Skate Company, WMTA and  other individuals and organizations. 

    • $90,000 County grant to beautify Pohaku Park (S-Turn) in Kahana.

    • Lobbied for $250,000 in capital improvements to light, fence & resurface the basketball park at the Lahaina Youth Center 

    • Lobbied County Administration to create development and ongoing operations for the Lahaina Aquatic Center.

    • Lobbied for creation and completion of Napili Park

    • March, 2014: Successfully lobbied the State Department of Transportation to change the speed limit from 35 MPH, to 45 MPH the Lahaina Bypass. The DOT agreed and has revised the speed limit to 45 MPH on the section of the Bypass between Lahainaluna and Hokikio. The rest of the Bypass will be at 30 and 35 MPH with the exception of the entry and exit portions which will remain at 20 and 25 MPH.

    • March, 2014: Successfully lobbied the State DOT to restripe lanes on Honoapiilani Highway going South, left turn onto Keawe Street (to Lahaina Bypass) to allow more than 6 cars to be in that lane.

    • Strongly supported approvals for Affordable Housing approvals in West Maui resulting in development of Front Street Apartments, Residences at Kahana Village, and upcoming Stanford Carr-Weinberg Project expansion adjacent to Front Street Apartments.

    • Was the original organization to lobby for the creation of a Lahaina By Pass project with State DOT with support from County of Maui.

    • Successfully lobbied to get the State of Hawaii to widen Honoapiilani Highway 

    • Lobbied to fast-track emergency repairs on Honoapiilani highway to repair the Olowalu collapse (see image to the left "Olowalu")

    •  

    • Lobbied for the recent $30 million dollar release for phase 1 of the Lahaina Bypass  

    • Lobbied for the creation of the newly established Lahaina Senior Center 

    • Lobbying for the immediate repairs of Lower Honoapiilani Road, anticipating the start of phase 4 soon to be underway. 

    • Lobbied State DOT to repair our only access road which was literally falling in the ocean (see image to the left "Launiupoko")

    • Urging the County to develop a civil defense plan and recruiting volunteers to act as coordinators in the event of an emergency. 

    • Lobbied for an emergency trailer to be placed next to the Lahaina Fire Station to house emergency supplies such as medicines, food, blankets & medical tools and supplies in case of disaster in Lahaina  

    • Lobbied to update Lahaina Civic Center to a full fledged safety shelter capable of handling more than 1 type of disaster 

    • Lobbied for the Approval of the necessary entitlements for land use and zoning for the West Maui Improvement Foundation's Certificate of Need assistance with Newport Hospital Corp. resulting in successful receipt of the Certificate of Need or CON for the West Maui Hospital. 

    •  Lobbied for approval of the Ma'alaea Emergency Assistance Vehicle as a necessary added resource for West Maui mitigating the fact that often both Ambulances on West Maui are out of area  and unavailable to respond accordingly. 

    • Only Community to Privately Raise Monies to build sorely needed  fire and ambulance station in Napili in 1992, when the County of Maui  was ready and able to budget ongoing operations.  (see image below)

    • Successfully lobbied for $85,000 to purchase two emergency vehicles to aid in transport of the H.I.T.T. team ( Highway Incident Traffic Team) to minimize lengthy road closures as well as be a first response to moving wrecked vehicles from roadways.  

    • Spearheading constant support for Police and Fire Department purchases for tools to make our local heroes more efficient and to help protect and save lives  

    • Successfully lobbied for the return of Maui County's Air Ambulance system, currently up and running. 

    • Taking the bite out of your property tax bill -NO EXTRAORDINARY TAX RATE HIKE since WMTA'S 1988 public service campaign on the issue! 

    • Lobbied in support of increasing the Tax Breaker amount to allow for additional relief for homeowners  

    • Constant lobbying for the decrease of property taxes, as assessed values increased.
