Board sets direction for WMTA for 2004-2005

The Board of Directors for the WMTA meets monthly and discusses concerns in West Maui, and takes into consideration what areas need to be addressed and how to take action on each of them. This is the process in which goals and objectives are set. Goals are then prioritized by the length of time that is needed to complete or monitor them. With this process projects are given a short or long term time frame. On the morning of June 8, 2004, the Board of Directors unanimously approved the listing for the upcoming year and here they are:

Short Term Goals

Health & Safety

  1. Support development of a West Maui 24 Hour Acute Care facility for Emergency Medical services.
  2. Support retrofit of the Lahaina Civic Center as an Emergency Shelter.
  3. Improve access to Emergency Shelters from roadways.
  4. Monitor progress of the establishment of air ambulance in Maui.
     

Traffic and Roadways

  1. Monitor and expedite the progress and construction of the Lahaina Bypass phase 1
  2. Immediately fund and monitor County roadway improvements up Lahainaluna road through alternate route via Keawe St. Improvements and also to include funding for design and construction of Kahoma/Ikena St. Bridge.
  3. Movement of Honoapiilani Highway inland at specific areas being destroyed by erosion
  4. Expedite funding and construction of Lower Honoapiilani road Phase IV improvements.
  5. Monitor conditions of County roadways to better implement the preventative maintenance programs.
  6. Monitor and expedite the progress of the Lahaina and Mala Pier improvements
  7. ROAD SHOULDER Improvements to Pali Area of Honoapiilani Hwy.
  8. Emergency Response Team Implementations Opening Roadways
  9. Lahaina Town Parking critical shortage
     

Taxes & Budget

  1. Continue to monitor Maui County Budget proposals and efficiency in Government.
  2. Maintain regular communications with County and State Elected officials with regular meetings involving Key Department heads, Council members and Legislature.

Parks/Recreation

  1. Add lighted outdoor playing facilities and playground equipment to West Maui parks.
    Receive funding for the Lahaina Skate Park.
  2. Advocate Public /Private Partnerships for additions of parks equipment and playground improvements.
  3. Develop a value added program for members.
  4. Continue to increase community visibility with weekly Lahaina News Column & Maui News articles
  5. Support the establishment of affordable housing in West Maui, to ensure they are built in a timely fashion taking into consideration safety first and foremost.
  6. Support the establishment of much needed infrastructure improvements at Lahainaluna High School;
  1. Replacement of cafeteria – high priority
  2. The additions of bleachers in the fields
  3. Tree trimming
  4. Additional classrooms
  5. Completion of locker rooms
  6. Creation of a track and field
  7. Creation of a softball field
     

Long Term Goals

Traffic & Roadways:

  1. Improve highway to 4 lanes from West Maui to Central Maui along safest possible route.
  2. Continuation of Lower road improvements
  3. Creation of alternate route from West Maui to Central Maui.
  4. Support Emergency access to Medical facilities

Parks/Recreation

  1. Monitor State & County park improvements for West Maui to include land acquisition for future parks.

Proposed Developments/Planning

  1. Support development of 24 Hour Acute Care Emergency Medical Facility on West Maui.
  2. Support development of any new schools for West Maui.
  3. Monitor future development in West Maui
  4. Lobby to place utilities underground on future development
  5. Support design and construction of new police station for West Maui.
  6. Support acquisitions of supplies for police through CDBG or Council.
  7. Support the establishment of affordable housing in West Maui
  8. Monitor Lahaina Town Harbor Improvements & Small Boat Harbor
